2 Parent Volunteers Needed for Lower Primary Sports Day

Dear Parents,

1E is in need of two parent volunteers to help in maintaining discipline while Ms Shikin is doing her duty during the Lower Primary Sports Day. The 'job scope' is as follows:

  • Ensure that pupils in the class are not walking around or leaving the hall without permission.
  • Ensure that the participants are lined in an orderly manner.
  • Ensure that pupils are behaving to their best ability. (They are able to shout & cheer for their class though.)
PVs are to be in the hall by 9.30am. The pupils will be having their recess till 9.30am and I will be bringing them up to the hall.

Chinese Matters - Term 4 Week 1

Dear Parents,

Hope that your child have had a well rested holiday thus far.

We will be starting our 4th and final term of the year this coming Monday, and here are a few notes for you and your child.

1) Some of the pupils have yet to hand in their Chinese Test 3 scripts back for checking and marking
    of corrections. Would like to seek for your assistance to remind your child to bring the script back
    to school on Monday.

2) We will continue with our 1B syllabus this term, so do remind your child to bring along his/her 1B
    Chinese Text Book on Monday.

3) I will be collecting pupil's Chinese spelling book (signed and with corrections done) on
    Monday.

4) I will need pupils to use their small whiteboards during lessons sometimes, so I would like them to
    bring along their small whiteboards and marker (if they have) to school on Monday. For pupils who
    do not have a small whiteboard or marker for the time-being, I will be able to loan them or arrange
    for them to share with their classmates.

Dear Parents,

Starting from this term, there will be an ongoing enrichment programme for the students which takes place only once a week (On Wednesdays) where students are grouped to attend either a customised oracy package to enhance their oracy skills, or a lesson on the “深广" text in their Chinese textbook. This programme is solely for enrichment and there are no differentiated streams in the case of a real banding of the students. 


The Primary One teachers are each designated to conduct either the oracy package or the “深广" lesson, and for my case, I conduct the “深广" lesson. Thus on Wednesdays, students who are in the core group will go to another class (1D or 1G) to attend the oracy package.

Majority of the students in Primary One form the Core group, where they attend the customised oracy package. During this lesson, students get many opportunities to interact and converse in Mandarin with each other, and they are also introduced to vocabulary connected with different themes (eg. School Facilities, Colours).

A smaller number of students are selected to attend lessons on the “深广" text in their Chinese textbook. We selected these students based on their overall performance in Chinese for the first semester. This group of students have shown strength in their oracy skills and during this enrichment lesson, we work to tap on their reading skills. Please do note that students belonging to this group will be sitting for the same assessment as the rest of the school. This one extra text that they read is solely for their enrichment and they will not be tested.

p.s. There will be some weeks where the enrichment programme will not take place due to ongoing PERI assessments or school events happening on the same week.

    • Pupils are to come dress as their favourite fairy tale character on that day. (Be creative & create your own costume instead of buying!)
    • 3 best-dressed characters will take part in the parade. Pupils must be able to tell the audience which book their character comes from and the name of their character.

  • Dear Parents, I have handed the students a letter with details of the assignments for the June Holidays, it should be either stapled in their student diary or inside their homework file.
  • As we will be shifting to the Holland Grove campus during the holidays, I have returned the students their execise books, activity books and files so to minimise the possibility of loss during the move. I will be collecting back the 1B activity book (活动本) for marking when the students return from their June Holidays.
  • It has been an enjoyable and fun-filled first semester with the children. : ) Hereby wishing them a great holiday ahead!

温馨提醒/Gentle Reminders
  • The P1 Sing-a-Rainbow (唱出彩虹) programme will take place next Wednesday, 22nd May. The programme will be conducted during their MT period, thus other subjects will not be affected. The students are welcomed to perform in their home clothes, on whether they need to change out into their school uniform after the performance, I will update the students ASAP.
  • As there will be no more 听写 for this term, students are advised to leave their spelling books at home for now. I will be collecting back the spelling books when school reopens in Term 3.
  • We have finished the syllabus for 1A, thus students can keep both their 1A textbooks and activity books at home for future revision.
  • The class will be doing 造句(二)next week, so the students will need to bring their 造句本 next Monday for collection. I will be reminding them in class tomorrow.

Updates on Home Economic Lesson: Making a healthy sandwich

Dear Parents,

For those who are interested, the lesson will be on Thursday (25/04/13) from 2pm - 3pm. It would be good for you to reach school at 1.45pm to help with the arrangement of ingredients. The washing up will take about 10 - 15 mins after the students are done with it.

They are to bring a lunch box or zip-lock bag just in case they are not able to finish the sandwich and would like to bring it home.

1E requires about 6 parent volunteers for our learning journey trip to Mac Donalds and West Coast Park.

Announcements
  • Chinese Spelling (听写) will be conducted on Fridays (18/4 and 25/4) these two weeks.
  • There will be a Listening Comprehension Assessment (听力测验) for the students this Wednesday. This test will account for 5% of the overall grade for this year.
    The test will consist of 2 components, namely 听力选图(listen to choose the correct picture description) and 听力理解 (Listening to a short paragraph and attempts MCQ based on the paragraph)

International Friendship Day Activity

Dear Parents,

By now I'm sure your child would have told you that they are required to surf the net to look for a country's flag based on the continent given to them. Do follow the instructions given below should they forget what they are supposed to do.
  1. Choose a flag of a country according to their given continent. They are to draw and colour at the given template.
  2.  Take note of the colours of the flag and what the colour represents. They could either write it on a piece of paper of print the page. Put it in their homwork file once they are have done that.
  3. Go to http://www.worldatlas.com/cntycont.htm . Click on a country to read about the country. Click on flags to see the flag of the country. The flag of the country is the one on the left.
Ensure that they have done it before Friday. They will need the flag, information and glue on Friday during International Friendship Day. Students are to wear other country's costumes with their school shoe. Lesson is as per normal on that day.

温馨提醒/Gentle Reminders

  • As there will be a Chinese test for the class next Wednesday, the final spelling for this term (汉语拼音8-9) will be conducted on Week 10, 14th March.
  • I will be returning the Chinese files to the children for their revision and your reference tomorrow. I will also be returning the activity book (活动本)and spelling book.
  • The pupils will be tested on the content from 汉语拼音 1-汉语拼音 7. They will need to be able to recognise the pronounciation of the various 韵母(eg. a, o, e, ie, ao, ou etc.) and 声母(eg. b, p, m, f, zh, ch, sh, r etc.) from the chapters, and be able to write out the hanyu pinyin for the Chinese Characters in the “我会认” section of the chapters. Lastly they will also need to be able to read and understand sentences written in hanyu pinyin. (I will be giving them an exercise on this section as a practice)

  • 下个星期四和星期五(21/2 , 22/2)学校将在食堂举行书展,书展售卖的书籍内容海报已经交给学生,想要购买的同学记得在以上日期带钱来学校向书摊购买。
    There will be a Chinese book fair on the 21 Feb and 22 Feb in the school canteen. The brochures for the book fair have been given to the students, those who are interested to buy the books, just remember to get ready their cash on the above two days to purchase their books from the vendors.
Assessment Matters
1. There will be a Listening Comprehension Practice for the class next week. There will be no weightage  for this practice. (I will update the class on the actual day of the practice soon.

2. There will be a Chinese Test for the class on 6th March (T1W9) , the contents of the test has been given to your child, and I have asked them to stapler it in their student diary. (pg D-14) There will be no weightage for this test.

    • Due to a number of students who did not learn their spelling, I will be postponing it to Friday instead. It's okay, I understand it's the festive season. I will take into consideration the next time to postpone after a festive period. Spelling will be back to Wednesday from next week.
  • Learning Journey (LJ) to Zoo
    • I have given out the learning journey consent form to the students. Parents who wish to join as parent volunteers (PVs) are to tick at the correct box. Let me just preempt that not all will be able to join us as I will only need 10 PVs for this LJ. I will keep the names of those who could not join us for the next LJ. This is to ensure that all parents will have a chance to join your child in their learning.
  • Venture in Maths Magazine
    • You are to post the registration form on your own as the vendor has collected the box from the general office. Thank you.
  • Whiteboard
    • I understand that your child has a file filled with whiteboard, marker and a duster, please ensure that all the items are labeled with their name. I will collect the file with the items next Monday to be kept in class.

Reflections:
After frequent practices and revisiting of the chapters learnt, I can see a general improvement in the students' learning. Students are also doing better in following classroom routines and that allowed them to feel more engaged during lesson time.

Spelling & Informal Assessment

Dear Parents,

My apologies on this change of day for the spelling. The students will be having IT lesson on Wednesday. Hence, there will not be enough time for them to have spelling on that day.

I have overlooked their Chinese spelling being on Thursday. Therefore spelling for English will be on Friday instead this week.

May I take this note to also inform you that there will be an informal reading assessment this week. It might stretch till next week. There's no weightage for this assessment.

Also, there will be an informal poem recitation on week 5. This might also stretch till week 6. I will be briefing your child about this tomorrow.
